Like most other small towns settled in the late 1700's early 1800's, Newark Valley is a town that has developed step by step through time. It has seen wave after wave of new technologies and people, not to mention the continually growing population. New advances in farming technology have driven the area to become predominately a dairy community. Transportation has changed considerably since the time of first settlement. Even though there is a creek running through the heart of the town, water was not the chosen form of transportation in the 1800's. The creek was too narrow and non-navigable causing settlers to have to travel by land. Since then, many road networks have been created to run through NV. Route 38 has become a main line for Tioga county, and it has helped the economy in Newark Valley become much more stable since the times of simply relying on farm work to get by.
